Very happy with what I got. There's only one problem but Xantrex is offering me a replacement. The unit I got has an annoying buzz sound and it gets louder when no load is applied. Just confirming the specs, one amp is lost as soon as you turn on the inverter.
It's a wonderful piece of equipment! And Xantrex is really helpful!
Update Oct 1, 2008.
I have used the new unit (replacement) for only 4 months at a 5% time rate and it's giving me lots of trouble. I get all lights on (sometime flashing) with no 110 ouput and there's nothing I can do to reset it. I'm in contact with Xantrex and it seems that they might be interested in solving my problem again. The XS-400 is about 10 times the price of a cheap unit because it's pure sine wave and reliable. I'm loosing faith! I'll keep you posted.
Update February 17, 2009.
I had to do my homework and rewrite my story in details but yes I got a third bran new unit. Thanks to Charles Miller at Xantrex who understood and believed my story. This wonderful person, really made an effort at solving my problem. It seems that starting the engine using the same battery as the inverter (while on) is not a good thing for their microprocessors. I still find that rather strange for such sophisticated unit but after a third chance I'm happy to follow that rule. I haven't installed this third unit yet so I still don't know what to conclude about the XS 400 performance. Maybe I've been very unlucky so far but one thing I can say for sure, Xantrex (Charles Miller) is really trying to help me.
New update October 21, 2009. The inverter is still giving me lots of trouble. I'm trying to reach Xantrex again but they remained silent so far. I've come to realize that I am the only one in the world stuck with this highly unreliable device (I don't think it could be called an inverter anymore). Here is the message I have sent to Xantrex.
September 12, 2009.
Dear Charles (hope you are still there)
My inverter is still not working properly! After a couple of weeks it started to crash down, showing its red light for no apparent reason. Even without any load at all. It is directly connected to the batteries and always isolated from the starting battery. I have meticulously checked everything and I cannot see any reason for such behavior.
I bought a $39.95 west marine 150 watts (probably made by Xantrex) and using the same connections this one performs flawlessly. The only draw back is a buzz in the sound system which is the reason why I bought the XS-400 in the first place.
I don't trust the XS-400 anymore. At this point, I simply got nothing for my money, even worst, lost time, money and effort at installing, dismantling, rewiring ($300.00), scratching head! So, if I'm still a legitimate customer, I would then whish for a full refund for the XS-400, this could be applied on the purchase of another model like the prosine or else. I would be willing to invest more but only in a much more reputable model like the prosine, including all warranties!
Anything new (about the XS-400) on your side!
Richard
